Visiting and working from other transition zones on the coast in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
Port Waikato. 2016. 37.39097°S, 174.73255° E
Climate zone: Warm Temperate/Marine. Transition zone: Coastal/River Mouth.
Port Waikato is on the West Coast of the North Island and is where the Waikato River reaches the sea. I spent 2 days here and at the time it was wild and windy, the waves were huge, and there was a lot of sea foam. There was plenty of detritus on this beach and lots of other human indicators, vehicle tracks and dog tracks. I photographed and collected, and had a lovely time on this wild bit of coast.

I made a few artworks with the materials I collected here, sorting them into colours first.
Castlepoint. 2016. 40.90153°S, 176.22461°E
Climate Zone:Temperate. Transition zone: Coastal/Estaury
Castlepoint is on the East Coast in the Wairarapa. Here there is an estuary and a lighthouse. The human traces here were largely vehicle tracks, human footprints, dead fish (recent) and less recent skeletal remains. There was very little plastic detritus here. The documentation was mostly photographic. i did collect a few dried up fish heads which I later cast in resin in a different project.

On the Southern Wairarapa Coast of the North Island, South East of Wellington. Another beautiful and wild section of coast in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Another lighthouse, seals and some general and fishing detritus.
I collected entanglements of fishing line, some other man-made detritus, some natural objects and a lone seal flipper. Photos Below: Some of the small sculptures I made later.
